Noe Van Messel – explosive, powerful, dynamic and consistent. All qualities that have made him a swinging star and today ensure that he is not even accommodated by the current pandemic and the resulting cancellation of the swinging season. We were allowed to ask the newly graduated high school graduate and future bobsledder a few questions.
Due to the Corona epidemic, almost all events are cancelled this year. Unfortunately, there are no sports events with physical contact to think about at the moment. After your sensational career start last summer, how does the forced break feel for you?
It is of course a pity and disappointing that there are no swing festivals but I can handle them well. From my enforced break due to the rupture of my cruciate ligament I am used to not participating in any competition for one summer. But I hope that in 2021 there will be a wrestling festival again. This summer now I simply have more time to train and that brings many advantages.
It is still open if there will be any wrestling festivals again in September. In May you said to the Regional Journal Central Switzerland: “Everyone should have the right to hold a wrestling festival. And I have no problem with that. If there are wrestling festivals, it is nice, it is not only one or two.” Are you still positive about autumn?
No, I’m afraid not. I hope that this one wrestling festival can be held, but I don’t see any chance for it. Probably it would be better to draw up protection concepts for next year now, so that at least next season the swinging spectacle can be watched.

A few days ago we learned that you will be the pusher in Timo Rohner’s four-man bob in the future. Is this decision a consequence of the cancelled competitions in the summer, or has the desire to pursue another top sport always been fermenting in your life?
I am and have always been a sports enthusiast, which is why I am starting this winter on the ice and not just in sawdust. But I would also have done a season-long bobsled if Corona wasn’t here. I simply want to gain as much experience as possible, which can help me in sports, but also as a person or in my job.

In the video above, you tear up a whole stack of books with ease. Now you received your Matura a few weeks ago (congratulations from us!) and studied some reading material in preparation for the exams. Did the same fate befall these books afterwards? 🙂
No on the contrary. I didn’t have to take any oral exams, but I still read a book that would have been tested on my German Matura. The translation of Homer’s Odyssey has always appealed to me and now I had the time to read it. The rest of the books are now gathering dust in the bookshelf, maybe I will find the time and motivation to read them as well. 🙂
This weekend is August 1st. Do you have plans for the national holiday?
Yes, like every year on August 1st is my grandmother’s birthday. We will surely stop by her shortly. But in the morning I still have training, a day without sports is just difficult for me 😉 In the evening we are invited to friends to celebrate our national holiday.
This summer, the big summer holidays abroad are also cancelled for many. Switzerland stays at home. Are you also travelling home this summer and if so, where might one meet you?
I’ll certainly go on a few weekend trips in Switzerland. But most of the time I will be in the beautiful Aegeri Valley. But I will certainly not go abroad, I prefer to enjoy the beautiful Switzerland with all its facets.

Finally, a completely different question: If you were only allowed to own 5 things, what would they be?
Good question, I think you can’t limit your life to five things. But if I had to choose, it would be a beautiful wristwatch so that time doesn’t pass too quickly, a photo camera to capture all the beautiful moments, a photo book from my childhood, my wreath from Stoosschwinget 2019 and a beautiful sports car, since I am a car lover.
